Testimonial
As long as the programs at 21 Roots Farm are available, my daughter, will be there. During a summer without school care, the farm gave her a chance to be outside gardening and learning about animals while I was at work. I tell people I want to live at 21 Roots Farm, I’m always looking for an opportunity to go back out.
21 Roots Farm gives our kids, teens and adult children with special needs a sense of normalcy that 20 years ago would never have existed. It’s a chance for them to be active, learn and do some farming (there’s always something to do on a farm) in a rewarding way.

YEAR-ROUND
The Agriculture Institute
At 21 Roots Farm, the Agriculture Institute offers inclusive, hands-on agricultural experiences for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Rooted in connection, purpose, and growth, the program supports skill-building, confidence, and meaningful relationships through daily farm life.
The Agriculture Institute is designed to meet individuals where they are, honoring personal interests, abilities, and goals. Through real work, supportive routines, and shared experiences, participants are encouraged to build independence while feeling valued as part of a caring community.
Program Focus Areas:
- Employment readiness & life skills
Farm-based work builds vocational skills that support success on the job and in daily life. - Personal enrichment & well-being
Meaningful farm experiences promote connection, joy, healthy living, and teamwork.
Each participating farmer follows an individualized, flexible routine shaped around their interests, goals, and support needs. Whether focused on job readiness or simply enjoying time on the farm, everyone is engaged, supported, and included through the steady rhythms of farm life.

YEAR-ROUND
Work Experience Program
At 21 Roots Farm, the Work Experience Program offers personalized, hands-on opportunities for Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to explore meaningful agricultural work. Rooted in person-centered planning, the program supports skill-building, confidence, and workplace readiness through real-world farm experiences.
Participating farmers work independently and collaboratively, focusing on career exploration, skill development, and natural job supports. Through guided discovery and goal setting, individuals build essential work habits such as stamina, communication, and self-advocacy while exploring a variety of farm-based tasks.
Experiences May Include:
- Seasonal planting, harvesting, and packing of produce boxes
- Entrepreneurship training, including teamwork, workplace communication, pricing, customer interaction, and basic marketing
- Creating farm-made products such as soaps, balms, lotions, dryer balls, and other handcrafted goods
- Woodworking, animal care, routine farm maintenance, and select construction projects
With personalized support and guidance, participants are encouraged to try new tasks, strengthen existing skills, and grow in independence. By blending purposeful work with a supportive, inclusive farm environment, the Work Experience Program helps individuals build confidence, skills, and a sense of purpose that extend beyond the farm.
